How to Import Windows Media Player Playlists to Winamp Migrating your music library between media players does not mean you have to rebuild your favorite playlists from scratch. If you are switching from Windows Media Player (WMP) to Winamp, you can move your curated tracks in just a few steps. Windows Media Player saves playlists in a format called .wpl, which Winamp can natively read and convert. Follow this guide to transition your music seamlessly. Step 1: Locate Your Windows Media Player Playlists
Windows Media Player automatically stores your playlists in a specific system folder. Open File Explorer on your computer.
Navigate to your user profile’s music directory. The standard path is: C:\Users[YourUsername]\Music\Playlists.
Look for the files ending with the .wpl extension. These are your Windows Media Playlist files. Step 2: Open the Playlists in Winamp
Winamp features a built-in playlist editor that allows you to load external playlist files directly. Launch Winamp.
Open the Playlist Editor window. If it is not visible, press Alt + E on your keyboard to toggle it on.
Click the File menu at the top-left of the Winamp interface, or click the + (Add) button at the bottom of the Playlist Editor window. Select Open Playlist (or Load Playlist).
Browse to the folder where your WMP playlists are stored (Music\Playlists).
Select the .wpl file you want to import and click Open. Your songs will instantly populate the Winamp playlist window. Step 3: Save the Playlist in Winamp Format
To ensure that Winamp retains this playlist permanently in its own library, you must save it in a Winamp-supported format like .m3u or .m3u8.
With the imported tracks active in the Playlist Editor, click the File menu in Winamp or the List Opts button at the bottom of the playlist window. Click Save Playlist (or press Ctrl + S).
Choose a destination folder where you want to keep your Winamp playlists.
In the “Save as type” dropdown menu, select M3U Playlist (*.m3u). Give your playlist a name and click Save. Step 4: Add Playlists to the Winamp Media Library
To make your newly saved playlists easily accessible from the main Winamp Media Library panel, you can import them into the library interface. Open the Winamp Media Library window (Alt + L). Right-click on Playlists in the left-hand navigation tree. Select Import playlist from file.
Navigate to the .m3u file you saved in Step 3, select it, and click Open.
Your Windows Media Player playlist is now fully integrated into Winamp, complete with your original track order. To help optimize your setup, please let me know:
